Sartorial Roundup: 2013 Golden Globes

After spending a few days at home with my family to celebrate the life of my Grandpa, I've come back refreshed and ready for the year to really begin.  This, of course, as silly as it seems means celebrating the beginning of the awards show season with the Golden Globes.

I was busy traveling back to the east coast while the pretty people in Hollywood were walking the red carpet, but I've finally gotten caught up and I certainly have a few opinions.  Please enjoy my commentary below...
Kerry Washington was perfect in Miu Miu, from sheer in all the right places to the length, to her sleek hair, this look is spot on.

Sartorial Compass: Michelle Williams, Gown Gorgeous

Michelle Williams has been gracing red carpets for a while now, but it wasn't until Brokeback Mountain that she really stepped up her red carpet game.  Below are a few of her best gown moments from years past.  Who could ever forget the mustard Vera Wang gown that made her the fashion icon that she is today.

 Love her in color!!
These gowns are so insanely gorgeous and ethereal.

The dress in the center is Miu Miu from last years Met Gala, it fit her personality perfectly and physically fit her like a dream as well.

Sartorial Compass: Rachel Bilson, In Print

Rachel Bilson is open to trying everything.  One day she'll be an expert at color-blocking and the next she goes with all over print.  There are so many great prints for us to choose from during the spring and going into summer but sometimes it's overwhelming.  Hopefully she can help guide you to the perfect print for spring!

Red pants, patterned blouse and an animal print, and it works seamlessly.

At the 2010 Met Gala Rachel Bilson, like Maggie Gyllenhaal, chose a dress from the Louis Vuitton Spring collection, it was such a perfect print and fit on her!

Will this inspire you to find the perfect prints for the season?

Sartorial Compass: Maggie Gylenhaal, Black + Blue

Maggie is a fearless advocate of prints one day and a lover of minimalist design in deep hues another. She has truly stolen my heart all over again during my search for these photos.

Black Vionnet dress with white peek-a-boo.
Any smart girl loves a pop of red.

I love this smoky blue, and when you look closely you see a very faint pattern in the fabric.

Two printed gowns during one awards season?  I like how this lady thinks.
Navy + Black = Perfection.
I may be the only person in the world that liked this dress on her at the Met Gala in 2010, but I can't help loving everything about it.  The dress is from one of the best Louis Vuitton collections in my recent memory, and I love the understated pattern and the heavy black straps.

Oscar for Best Dressed...

Quality is absolutely better than quantity.  That's why I couldn't have been more thrilled with the four dresses that wowed me {out of how many?} at Sunday's Academy Awards.

Michelle looked divine in this Louis Vuitton, the peplum, the texture, the color!  It was all quite perfect, I was so relieved since her other dresses had been nice, but not stunning.  This dress also reminded me of the red Louis Vuitton that Zoe Saldana wore a couple of awards seasons ago.
Emma Stone of all people is one we should call on to pull off a massive neck-bow.  She looks gorgeous in this deep pink Giambattista Valli dress, my only qualm with this look was when you saw an up close of her makeup, her eyeshadow was pink...but that's besides the point...best dressed!
IN LOVE with Rooney Mara in this Givenchy.  The perfect antidote to her dark tresses, and even darker role.

Shailene Woodley looked effortlessly perfect in Valentino Couture.  I love how unexpected it is, a girl under 21 who isn't wearing a sparkly ball gown?!

Of course the evening's honorable mentions are as follows...

Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen, Kristen Wiig in J. Mendel, Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford, and last but not least the coolest girl "who runs the world," as Beyonce would say, Meryl Streep in Lanvin!

Sartorial Compass: Leighton Meester, Pattern Me Crazy

As much as Leighton loves a subtle watercolor print she's not one to shy away from bold prints either.  Whether it be a wild Louis Vuitton look from the 2009 Met Gala, or a sleek Vera Wang look and bold skirt she is not afraid of going for something a little crazy!  Check out her best patterned looks below.

First are 3 looks designed by the incomparable Marc Jacobs, the first is from Marc Jacobs spring '11 collection, and the other two are both Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton.  She wore the legging/dress combo for the 2009 Costume Institute Gala at the Met, it embodies everything that the event is meant to be about, high fashion and no holds barred.
Pattern on the bottom here means Proenza x J. Brand jeans, a Vera Wang look, and more Proenza!!
As previously documented Missoni is well known for their killer patterns and Leighton was featured in their Spring 2011 ad campaign.

Leighton is clearly okay with taking risks so never be afraid to go crazy with bold patterns!  Next week make sure to check out the Sartorial Compass as I'll be featuring a few of Leighton & Blair Waldorf's greatest hits!  Check out a couple of bonus looks...

Sartorial Compass: Leighton Meester Black & White

Our November Sartorial Compass is here, and in contrast to Kirsten Dunst, Leighton is quite new on the scene, yet she's had quite the introduction to the fashion world while playing socialite  Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl.  G.G. is on its 5th season, and I couldn't be more thankful that it came along to introduce me to such a fashion risk taker (and um the Blair & Chuck saga). Today take a look at Leighton's affinity for crisp and clean white ensembles as well as her love for looks on the darker side...

When she wears white she tends to let the looks do the talking. Just recently she was in Toronto debuting a film in the crocheted dress, it's an outfit that definitely showcases her mature fashion sense with its mid-length hem. And of course there's the white Bottega Veneta dress she wore SO WELL to the Golden Globes accessorized with a lovely red lip.

She also leans toward all black quite often, but tends to play up her darker looks with heavier makeup and accessories. The first is a dress from Christopher Kane's first collection for resurrected line Versus, I was enamored with the flounce and pleats on the dresses.  She definitely doesn't do boring black!

This is one of my favorite Leighton fashion moments, she wore this leather Chanel dress to a Chanel show and dared to be different by adding a chunky necklace to an already amazing dress.

She knows how to keep her look classic in black and white but never shies away from adding big time accessories or bold makeup.

Sartorial Compass: Kirsten Dunst Evening & Beyond

Luckily October has 5 Sunday's so missing the first Sunday of this months Sartorial Compass has not put me behind at all!  In today's edition of Sartorial Compass, she sartorially kills it in one bunch of ethereal gowns and then another bunch shows off her darker side.  Check out the lovely looks...

These lovely looks include three Chanel gowns (maybe four...not sure about look 1) and a light blue Rochas dress that looks fantastic with her auburn locks.  She definitely has a formula: ruffles, pastels and a perfect pucker.

I love these looks, her porcelain skin glows in dark dresses which from the left include Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and more Chanel.  I have to say that the Louis Vuitton dress is from one of my absolute favorite LV collections of late, and it flatters her figure quite nicely.

Lastly Kirsten is also a big fan of Proenza Schouler and shows that she's loved them for a while...

A Proenza look from 2007-ish.

And here she sports a super cool look from their Spring 2011 line.

Sartorial Compass: Zoe Saldana Gown Gorgeous

These are the looks you HAVE got to check out.  We know that Zoe loves flirty fun party dresses, and print etc...but did you know she is an absolute PRO when it comes to full on gowns?  In her last week as your sartorial compass, let her lead you to the land of beautiful dresses....

She really loves red and really rocked it out in these four dresses...from left Armani Prive at Cannes 2011, Prabal Gurung dress at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, Louis Vuitton at the 2010 Golden Globes, and Givenchy Haute Couture.

LOVE the architectural details on this silver one...I think it's also Armani Prive

.
Zoe wore this dress the other night for one of the premieres for her latest movie.  It's Balmain, and the combo of leather, metallic detailing and the ethereal white chiffon(?) makes this super hardcore and beautiful at the same time!

And last but not least THE PURPLE DRESSSSSSS!!  When I first saw her on the red carpet for the Oscars (I think 2010) I started squealing...and immediately texting my roommate at the time..."ZOE SALDANA IS WEARING THE Givenchy purple dress."  It kills me how cool this dress is, yeah maybe the top is a little disjointed from the bottom...but there are explosions of purple ombre cascading down the dress, making it awesome!

Check out these last two looks that Zoe has sported recently (I forgot about one, and one was too recent that I missed it)...  The first is from a polo tourney in L.A. that Prince William and his wifey attended and the second is from an event the other week, I think it's Lanvin.

Sartorial Compass: Zoe Saldana the Minimalist

Last week I featured Zoe as a lover of patterns...this week she goes in the opposite direction with intense minimalism.  She models intimates for Calvin Klein so she's super tight with cutie Francisco Costa, CK's Creative Director, and is often seen sporting CK's super sleek frocks.

Check out Zoe and her minimalist tendencies....

Above three dresses are all Calvin Klein.  The below pictures though, I'm not entirely sure.

Today I leave you with the challenge to keep it simple but make sure you have a standout detail so your look is not boring.

And last but not least...not necessarily minimalist, but it's a solid color so...yeah.  Zoe in Louis Vuitton via style.com one of my ABSOLUTE favorite dresses of all time.

Sartorial Compass: Zoe Saldana

I'm changing up the way that I do Sartorial Compass, from now on I'll feature one fine lady (or male down the line) every month, so each Sunday I will post a different set of photos of said stylish lady (I hope that as today's post does, they'll all have themes!).  I found myself having to squeeze too many pictures into one post and it was way too cluttered.

Zoe Saldana first captured my attention as Eva the graceful dancer with the huge 'tude in Center Stage (in 2000...one of THE best movies ever) at some point during my middle school years.  Since then she's always gone relatively unnoticed by the general population and paparazzi alike, but she never fails to STUN on red carpets!  Zoe LOVES a standout print so below I've compiled my favorite patterned looks of hers...without further ado, your August Sartorial Compass Miss Zoe Saldana...

So obsessed with the unexpected touch of coral pumps with this D&G leopard and lace dress!

The above dress is Vionnet, it looks amazing and super comfortable.  Below is a Louis Vuitton dress I believe , she pulls it off perfectly with simple hair and makeup...letting the dress do the talking!

I leave you with hopes that these photos of Zoe are PRINT-spirational for you in your upcoming week.....
