Pining for Proenza

I first fell in love with Proenza Schouler in the fall of 2006 when they presented their Spring 2007 collection.  I've been falling further and further each season since, but Spring 2014 may have been the most spot-on, perfectly "me" collection there's ever been.  Suede, culottes, and shimmering midi-skirts galore, I literally can't get enough.  Oh and that jacket?  It looks like a shredded up berber rug, and I want to wear it now. 

 How could one not be excited about these skirts? 

The shoes are incredible. 

 The final couple of looks paired breezy culottes with chest plate-esque crop tops.  What?!  So good.  Take a look at their full collection here.

Birds of Paradise

 Proenza Schouler's Fall 2013 ad campaign, shot by David Sims, and featuring Sasha Pivorova, is both striking, and dark.  Digitally modified birds are juxtaposed against sleek, and modern designs in similar hues, to create striking visuals.  There's nothing in this world that Jack, and Lazaro do that I dislike, and this collection is no different, I can't wait to see it out and about in the real world this fall.

Punk: Chaos to Couture, Met Gala 2013

'Twas the greatest night in fashion on Monday and though I admit I was a bit scared of what looks would show up on the carpet, but looking back on the night I was actually pleasantly surprised, even if 50% of the evening's attendees weren't remotely prepared for the Punk: Chaos to Couture theme.  Have a look through my best dressed!

Above, Sarah Jessica Parker was completely on point, in a Giles Deacon dress, Louboutin over the knee boots and a Phillip Treacy topper.  W Mag's Giovanna Battaglia was perfectly gilded in Dolce & Gabanna.

The ladies in white, Rooney Mara & Nicole Richie looked like goth princesses dressed in Givenchy & Topshop, respectively. 

The Olsen's. I can't get over how perfect Ashley is in vintage Dior, MK was also wearing vintage {this robe... so good!}. 

Sienna Miller somehow managed to make Burberry look punk chic and LeeLee Sobieski, in Dior Couture always takes the right risks.

Chloe Sevigny looked amazing in Proenza Schouler {topped with a turban OBV} and Brooklyn Decker sported custom Peter Pilotto with some insanely rad accessories.  

 

Jamie King is always on point and last night was no different in her Topshop suit.  Miley Cyrus absolutely rocked the theme in her Marc Jacobs dress and her sick 'do.  

Punky florals came out on Kerry Washington in Vera Wang, it was PERFECT on her. I also loved Miss Kim Kardashian, I know this is not a popular choice, but I thought it was a really cool dress {especially for a girl who's worn some truly hideous maternity wear}.  I'm not the biggest fan of the gloves, but I really enjoyed the rest of her look.

Last but not least, the colorful bunch!  TTH walked the carpet with the designer of her dress, the incredibly handsome Thom Browne, the spikes were out of this world.  Last but not least the Mulleavy's and Fanning sisters brought the house down with some stunning and shocking Rodarte dresses.

It never hurts to go crazy at this event and play with the theme which is why the people who are most concerned with looking generically "beautiful" are the ones that simply end up boring.  What were your thoughts on the night?

Take Me To The Springs

For some reason completely out of my realm of understanding, it doesn't matter the time of year, the time of day, or the type of mood I'm in.  I am always drawn to editorials, and photography shot in Palm Springs.  With Coachella around the corner, I thought I'd go ahead and highlight a few of my favorite shots from the desert.

There's something about the dust, palm trees and mid-century architecture that I can't seem to tear my eyes away from.  It doesn't hurt that there's a hearty helping of Prada with a dash of Burberry, Proenza, and Balenciaga among other's, thrown into the mix.  This makes me crave a road trip through the southwest, more than ever before.

Sartorial Compass: Maggie Gyllenhaal, Print Perfection

Maggie G is obviously a fan of print, take her red carpet gowns from here and here, but in today's post you'll see how she wears print in everyday outfits.

Dries for days, he's the King of pattern and she is his queen.

On the left she's wearing Proenza Schouler, I love that it probably felt like pajama's to wear but looks really gorgeous at the same time.  I'm all about pajama fashion.  The fur in the center is a favorite look, simple, but  it makes a statement.

I absolutely love that she is fearless about prints, and hope that it never changes.  Just like all of the women I have chosen as Sartorial Compass' she knows what she likes and whether the public likes it or not, she is sticking to her look.  Because seriously, what is the purpose of fashion and style if you yourself don't love what you put on?

Oscar Party Circuit

I admit...I'm quite late with this one, but I just couldn't ignore all of the bonus dresses from Oscar night.  Nominees, and supporters alike turned it out making me wish that everyone was forced to wear two {or more} dresses throughout the evening.  And by everyone, I mean only a few of the best dressed ladies of course.

Did anybody notice anything about those last six?  Apparently I like black, lots of black, sheer and mixed textures, short, long and maybe even with a bit of sparkle thrown in.  Is there anything that you're seeing now that you wish would have been on the Oscar red carpet instead?
